Fluorescence Aided Caries Excavation (FACE), its indications, application and clinical results are the major focus of the third part of the lecture of Professor Dr. Wolfgang Buchalla, University of Regensburg/Germany.
Bacterially infected dentin shows red fluorescence when stimulated by purple light because of the porphyrin derivatives modified by bacteria. Healthy tooth substance shows green fluorescence. Ideally the light source (emitting light of a wave length of 405 nm) is integrated in the handpiece, but such a tool isn't available up to now. This is why Prof. Buchalla uses the SIROInspect-system. This system is held by the dental assistance who directs the light to the tooth while the dentist is excavating. The integration of detection and therapy succeeds partly this way.
Showing various clinical cases and a video of the excavation of a caries profunda Prof. Buchalla illustrates how an efficient and effective caries excavation can work with FACE while maintaining the vitality of the pulp.
