In this interview Prof. Dr. Dr. Karl Andreas Schlegel, Munich/Germany, answers various questions relating to the topic "Bone graft materials". The fields of application of bone graft materials and the use of autogenous bone blocks are discussed.
Autogenous grafts are certainly no longer to be viewed as the gold standard in all situations, however, in inflamed regions, for example, for treating peri-implantitis or absolute augmentation, one should still revert to autogenous material as the material of choice. Indications for the use of bone graft materials with difficult resorption, for example Bio-Oss, are presented.
Resorbable bone graft materials are suitable for use if they can be substituted through higher quality material in form of bone. The role of growth factors is discussed. Finally, an outlook on the future of bone graft materials is presented.
