Computer-assisted implant planning enables a detailed virtual implant planning with the chance of a minimal-invasive implant positioning appropriate to the prosthodontic concept. Appl. Prof. Dr. Joannis Katsoulis, University of Bern/Switzerland, explains how and why computer-assistance improves not only anatomical-surgical planning, but also prosthodontic planning - always looking for the maximum in aesthetic outcome.
The evaluation of individual implantation risks prior to the treatment is in the focus of all planning systems. Especially in elderly patients, in patients with large alveolar atrophy and in oncological cases computer-assisted planning is particularly helpful. In these difficult cases it means a comprehensive information about the bone available, about necessary pre-implant surgery and about the possible prosthodontics (fixed or removable). Planning is visualized and the patient can be informed about the procedure by digital illustrations.
For the implantologist the computer-assistance means a perfect preparation for the implant insertion, intraoperative surprises are reduced significantly. General aim is always to identify the perfect implant position and to make the final aesthetics as plannable as possible.
