Furcation defects and how to treat them are the focus of Professor Dr. Anton Sculean, University of Bern/Switzerland. He emphasises the importance of clinical diagnostics and correct classification of the furcation defect to consider a realistic estimation of therapy success.
This depends on the extent of the furcation defects as well as previous history of periodontal disease (recession defects, bone loss) relating to the tooth in question. Based on current research findings, this experienced clinician explains the degree to which guided tissue regeneration (GTR), the use of growth factors, flap techniques and combinations of these individual procedures have been able to achieve success so far.
Professor Sculean also shows how factors such as the patient's biotype and his or her compliance have a significant impact on the result of furcation defect therapy.
