Narrow implants and their indications are a topic much-debated. Dr. Dr. Dr. Thomas Ziebart, University of Mainz/Germany, introduces in this short presentation the current indications, the advantages and disadvantages and the long term results of this implants. Narrow or diameter-reduced implants have to be differentiated from mini-implants.

They are especially suitable for small gaps in the anterior region. Mainly compromised patient benefit by narrow implants whose bone supply calls for augmentation but whose general state of anamnesis doesn't allow such a procedure (e.g. intake of bisphosphonates because of osteoporosis). The most important disadvantage of narrow implants is their - in comparison to standard diameter-implant - increased fracture liability.

Advancement in alloys and optimization of the cervical design might decrease this risk in the future. Also modification of the implant shoulder design might have a positive effect on the stability of narrow implants.
