Pink Aesthetics Around Teeth and Implants

Next to the so-called white aesthetics of hard tooth substance, the pink aesthetics of soft issue surrounding tooth and implant are increasingly playing a major role. If the physiological soft tissue anatomy is marred, this is often perceived as aesthetic impairment. Most interventions to correct pink aesthetics are elective interventions. As these are invasive interventions with corresponding risks of surgery, the risks and benefits need to evaluated carefully.

A classical indication for surgical intervention is the correction of pink aesthetics to create a physiological soft tissue anatomy in the aesthetic zone for patients with a high smile line. Connective tissue grafts increase the predictability of coverage and are therefore to be recommended for corrective measures to pink aesthetics. Undermining techniques are superior to other techniques in terms of complete coverage. To obtain long-term stability of pink aesthetics following surgery, flap techniques with additional connective tissue grafts should be selected.

Microsurgical procedures improve early wound healing. Corrections to the pink aesthetics prove particularly difficult with exposed implant surfaces. Complete coverage of recession defects around implants is not possible, therefore prophylactic thickening of soft tissue should be performed prior to implantation in thin gingival types to avoid recession.
